When it comes to holiday entertaining, I like to serve a festive drink that feels like it came from a craft cocktail bar without requiring me to play bartender all night. This Christmas Cocktail with tequila has a vibrant, naturally red hue and is finished with a fresh rosemary sprig that instantly looks, feels and tastes like the holidays.
What I love most about this Christmas Cocktail is how simple and fresh it is. Pomegranate, cranberry, orange and lime juices are mixed with Reposado tequila for warmth and depth. It’s sweetened to taste with simple syrup. The result is bright, tart drink that can be shaken up for one or batched to serve a party.
Recipe tips & Substitutions
This Christmas Cocktail is intentionally flexible, which is important during the busy holiday season.
- Garnish for a Christmas Margarita. Serve this margarita-style by adding a salt or sugar rim to the glass for serving. You also can add a splash of triple sec for that signature margarita flavor.
- Switch up the spirit. Blanco tequila works, though the cocktail will be brighter and slightly sharper than my preferred Reposado. If tequila isn’t your thing, try this with vodka or gin. The woodsy gin works well with the natural aroma of the rosemary.
- Make it a mocktail. Leave out the tequila and pour combined juices over ice. Top with ginger beer or sparkling water.
- Buy pure juice. If you’re buying bottled juices, check the label and go for the 100% pure single-fruit juices. If you use a juice blend or one with added sugar, reduce or eliminate the simple syrup to taste.
Make it a Batch Christmas Cocktail
When you’re hosting a crowd, having a batch cocktail helps ensure everyone has a drink in hand upon arrival. It’s easy to make this a batch Christmas cocktail by stirring the juices together in advance to chill.
What you’ll need for roughly 20 servings:
- 4 cups Reposado tequila
- 2 ½ cups pomegranate juice
- 2 cups cranberry juice
- 2 cups fresh orange juice
- 1 cup fresh lime juice
- 1 cup simple syrup, adjusting for taste
- 1 tablespoon orange bitters
Stir everything, except for the tequila, together in a large pitcher or drink dispenser. Chill for at least 2 hours, or until ready to serve. For serving, stir in tequila and add festive fruit juice ice cubes (optional, details below). Serve over ice or in coupe glasses.
Hosting tip: You can put out bowls of garnish options – rosemary sprigs, fresh cranberries and pomegranate arils, for guests to self-serve and customize.
Make Festive Ice for Christmas Cocktails
One of my favorite ways to elevate this Christmas Cocktail is with festive ice cubes. The great thing about these is that they’re made from the same juices in the cocktail, so when they melt, the flavor stays consistent.
Ingredients you’ll need:
- 1 ½ cups pomegranate juice
- 1 cup cranberry juice
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- ½ cup fresh lime juice
This ratio will keep the ice cubes vibrant red and prevents them from freezing rock-solid due to the acidity of the orange and lime juice.
To assemble:
Add a rosemary sprig, 1 to 2 orange and lime wedges, a handful of fresh cranberries and a sprinkling of pomegranate arils to each cavity of a silicone mold. Slowly fill each with juice to keep everything suspended, and freeze for at least 8 hours or until fully solid.
When ready to serve, pop the cubes out of the molds and drop into your pitcher or drink dispenser.
As the ice melts, it slowly flavors the cocktail and keeps the drink looking beautiful from the first sip to the last. You an even stir in a splash or two of tequila as the ice melts to keep the drink strong.
